Mission Statement
MySovereignty.digital exists to empower individuals and organizations to reclaim control over their digital lives. We provide practical, accessible pathways to reduce dependency on surveillance-based technology ecosystems while maintaining functionality and convenience.
Our mission is to democratize digital sovereignty—making it achievable for everyone, not just technical experts. We believe that privacy, autonomy, and control over personal data are fundamental rights that should be accessible to all, regardless of technical ability.
“Digital sovereignty isn’t about isolation—it’s about conscious choice and meaningful control over the technology that shapes our lives.”
Background on the Digital Sovereignty Movement
The digital sovereignty movement has evolved as a response to the increasing centralization of digital infrastructure in the hands of a few technology giants. This concentration of power has led to numerous concerns:
- Data Sovereignty: Personal and national data increasingly resides on foreign servers, subject to foreign laws and surveillance.
- Surveillance Capitalism: The dominant business model of the internet relies on extensive tracking and behavioral prediction.
- Autonomy Erosion: As essential services move to cloud platforms, individuals and organizations lose control over their digital infrastructure.
- Knowledge Asymmetry: Tech companies know increasingly more about users, while users know less about how their technology works.
Digital sovereignty represents a growing movement to address these challenges by creating technical and social alternatives. It encompasses diverse approaches—from individual privacy protection to national-level technology policies—all aimed at rebalancing power relationships in the digital realm.
This movement is not about technological isolationism. Rather, it’s about creating meaningful choices and establishing systems where technology serves human values and democratic principles rather than purely commercial interests.
Our Story
MySovereignty.digital emerged from a recognition that recent advances in AI technology have created a unique opportunity to make digital sovereignty more accessible than ever before.
The project began with a simple observation: with tools like Claude 3.7 Sonnet, we can now develop sophisticated, user-friendly applications and guides that would have required large development teams just a year ago. This democratization of technology creation presents an opportunity to build sovereignty-respecting tools that are both powerful and accessible.
The founder’s background includes early work with IBM in the late 1970s and early 1980s, experience with early AI systems like ELIZA, and involvement in promoting personal computing concepts in the Americas and Far East. This perspective, including exposure to pioneering work at MIT, provides a historical context for understanding both the evolution and potential of computing technology.
This project isn’t about individual accomplishment but rather leveraging emerging AI capabilities to create practical solutions for digital sovereignty. The vision is to build a collaborative platform where community wisdom can enhance and expand these resources for everyone’s benefit.
Ethical Framework and Principles
Our approach to digital sovereignty is guided by core principles that inform all our recommendations and resources:
Transparency
We prioritize technologies and services that operate transparently and allow users to understand how their data is used. Open-source solutions are preferred when they meet functional requirements.
Balance
We recognize that perfect sovereignty often conflicts with practicality. Our recommendations balance ideals with usability, acknowledging that incremental progress is valuable.
Progressive Implementation
Digital sovereignty is a journey, not a destination. We encourage starting with manageable changes and building toward greater independence over time.
Privacy by Design
We favor technologies that protect privacy at the architectural level, rather than as an afterthought or optional feature.
Jurisdictional Diversity
Reducing dependency on any single legal jurisdiction increases resilience. We recommend diversifying digital services across different regulatory environments.
Community Empowerment
Digital sovereignty flourishes when knowledge and tools are shared. We’re committed to fostering a community where experiences and solutions can be exchanged.
Position on Geopolitics
Digital sovereignty transcends traditional political divisions. Our recommendations focus on technical merits and sovereignty impact rather than geopolitical considerations. However, we acknowledge several realities:
- Different legal jurisdictions offer varying levels of privacy protection and data rights
- Certain nations have laws requiring access to user data for their intelligence agencies
- Corporate power and government surveillance can both threaten individual digital sovereignty
Our position is pragmatic: we recommend tools and services based primarily on their technical characteristics and sovereignty-enhancing properties. Where relevant, we consider jurisdictional factors that may impact user privacy and data protection.
This project is neither anti-American nor anti-corporate. Rather, it recognizes that meaningful sovereignty requires diversity of options and reducing dependency on any single point of control, whether governmental or corporate.
We welcome contributors and users from all backgrounds who share our commitment to digital sovereignty, privacy, and user empowerment.
